Overture To New Beginnings
by Bruce Stark
When I commissioned Bruce Stark to write a piece celebrating the turn of the millennium, I was certain of only one thing: that his piece would be full of excitement! What I could not have foreseen was the daring structure of the piece, the extraordinary finesse of his orchestration, and the muscular main theme that could almost provide the soundtrack to an adventure film. Bruce Stark's 'Overture to New Beginnings' takes the listener on an exhilarating journey—albeit a six-minute one—and I hope to have the opportunity to commission many more, and longer, journeys from Bruce in the future.
— David Charles Abell, conductor
Overture To New Beginnings was commissioned and premiered by conductor David Charles Abell with the English Northern Philharmonia in 2000, and later performed three times by the Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Abell's baton. In 2015 conductor Joshua Zona led the Rapides Symphony (Louisiana) in a performance of the revised edition published in 2012.

Overture To New Beginnings was commissioned by David Charles Abell for its premiere under his baton by the English Northern Philharmonia as part of their New Years concert in 2000. I completed this revised edition in 2013 in response to the premiere and several subsequent performances. Though the work was written for the advent of a new millennium, the theme is of course perennial. The music is intended to convey the many feelings attendant with new beginnings: anticipation, excitement, uncertainty (the fast, scurrying theme in strings at the opening), a look backwards (the more dissonant passages, depicting a triumph over obstacles), and finally a robust, optimistic resolve to move forward, inspired by a new start. The piece celebrates the empowerment of new beginnings.
On a more personal note, I completed this new edition, with several cuts and numerous revisions, in the spring of 2013 as my family and I were gearing up for some new beginnings of our own: after spending over twenty years in Tokyo, in the summer of 2013 I relocated to the U.S. (Seattle area). For my wife and children it was their first time to live in the states, so the new edition was created during a time of anticipation and celebration of big changes to come for our family.
For all of us, may each day bring with it the renewed promise of life's unfolding in positive ways.
